Frazzled Minds Make Frazzled Choices
Bad Environments Lead to Bad Decisions
Bad environments lead to bad decisions, and boy, do we have stories to share! Ever looked back at some of your life choices and thought, “What on Earth was I thinking?” Yeah, me too!
We run into the chaos of those moments when our brains were more frazzled than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. We chat about how a little bit of panic can turn us into decision-making nincompoops, like forgetting to get a website for our podcast.
Spoiler alert: Having a website is a big deal if you want anyone to find your show. So, let’s unpack this hot mess together and figure out how to avoid those cringe-worthy blunders!
Looking at our past decisions is like opening a box of stale donuts; it’s messy, and you might regret it. We’re all guilty of making choices when we’re not in the right headspace.
I share classic examples, like the time someone thought not having a website was a smart move. It’s not. You want people to find your podcast? They need a place to land, not just a vague hope that they might stumble across it while scrolling through cat memes.
Now, let's not throw shade. We all start from different places, but this was a classic example of being "rattled" lead to bad decisions.
Takeaways:
- Bad decisions often come from panic or being overwhelmed, so slow down and think.
- Having a website is crucial for podcasters to be found and grow their audience.
- People tend to overlook basic steps when launching, like having a website ready.
- Without a website, you’re basically invisible to potential listeners trying to find you.
- Word of mouth is key for podcast growth, but you need a solid strategy to make it work.
- Don’t let a frazzled mindset lead to bad decisions—stay organized and plan ahead.

Speaker AIf you look at your decisions that you kind of go, can I do that one over again?
Speaker AIt's probably because you were either frightened or panicked or maybe there was just too much going on and you went, I don't care.
Speaker AThat one.
Speaker AAnd you move forward with that.
Speaker AAnd I bring this up because I was helping someone on my chat.
Speaker ANow, I'm not throwing shade here.
Speaker AWe all start at different places, but I saw this and I was like, oh, this is a classic example of that.
Speaker AI should talk about this on the podcast because the person wanted help with growing their show and sure, don't we all want a bigger audience?
Speaker AThat's great.
Speaker AAnd I said, what's your website?
Speaker AAnd he sent me.
Speaker AI'm not sure what it was, to be honest with you.
Speaker AOh, he sent me his feed.
Speaker AAnd so I'm like, no, no, no, not your feed, your website.
Speaker AAnd the person said, oh, yeah, I know I don't have one of those, but I'm in Apple, I'm in Spotify, and I've talked about this a million times.
Speaker ASearch in Apple and Spotify is not good.
Speaker AAnd in many cases you can't find your show.
Speaker AI'll have a link out in the show notes where you can see me prove that point.
Speaker AAnd it's not like domains are really expensive.
Speaker ASometimes they are, but most of the time they're less than $20 per year.
Speaker APer year.
Speaker ASo if you get like Dave's phone.com and you go, ah, it's taken.
Speaker AWell, maybe Dave's phone show or Dave Show Radio or something like that.
Speaker AAnd you look at like, oh, it's only, you know, $18 a year.
Speaker AYeah, but you missed it because you were kind of frazzled.
Speaker AAnd you can get these at.
Speaker AI'll have links to namecheap cooler websites is my godaddy reseller if you want to get it there.
Speaker AThese are not super expensive because again, it's like, you know, less than $20 a year.
Speaker AAnd he said, I'm actually kind of frazzled because I'm trying to do this, I'm trying to do that.
Speaker AAnd things aren't working the way I want.
Speaker AAnd I said, okay, but, like, 70% of podcasts are found via word of mouth.
Speaker AHow am I going to word of mouth you if I can't tell people where to go get your show?
Speaker AAnd of course, I could say, well, just find them wherever you find podcast on it.
Speaker AJust explain.
Speaker AThat's a really bad, bad, bad strategy.
Speaker AA much better strategy is go to my website and have links there to at least Apple and Spotify.
Speaker AAnd why not add Iheart because it looks good.
Speaker AAnd maybe Amazon while you're at it.
Speaker AMaybe Overcast, that's a top 10.
Speaker AAnd pocket cast, that would be good.
Speaker ABut I can't do that if you don't have a domain.
Speaker AAnd your domain can't be.
Speaker AThis is dot, try and dot dash, dot, spell this dot, X, K, M, double X, N, K.
Speaker ANo.
Speaker AAnd I know you're like, oh, yeah.
Speaker ABut you could send them that link via email.
Speaker AWord of mouth.
Speaker AHow are you going to show up in a Google search without a website?
Speaker AAnd people talk about things all the time.
Speaker AWell, look at Amazon.
Speaker AYeah, you can look at Amazon because they have Amazon.com walmart.com, all the big companies, and if you want, joe rogan.com.
Speaker Aright.
Speaker AWe all have websites so that we can tell people where to find us, and so can our listeners, and so can our audience.
Speaker AAnd look, I get it.
Speaker AI realize that we're at the beginning trying to figure out how to work this microphone.
Speaker AAnd what do you mean I got to upload a file?
Speaker AAnd do I do audio or video?
Speaker AMike?
Speaker AOkay, that's great.
Speaker ABut before you launch, you need a website.
Speaker AWhy?
Speaker ABecause when you launch, you want to tell everybody to go to your website where you have at least a trailer and the buttons for Apple, Spotify, Amazon, Iheart, Pocket Casts, and Overcast, so that when you have them there on your website, they can follow the show, but they can't follow the show if they can't find you.
Speaker AAnd we don't want to send them into the forest that is podcast apps.
Speaker ASend them to your website.
Speaker AAnd I realize that sometimes I'm going to podcast movement next week as I record this and I have a checklist because I've done this enough that I get to the hotel and I go, ah, crap, I forgot my toothbrush or forgot my deodorant or whatever it is.
Speaker AWhy?
Speaker ABecause I'm scrambling at the last minute to fill my suitcase so that now I'm like, wait, hold on, let's slow down a bit.
Speaker ALet's make sure, we have everything.
Speaker AAnd so there are times when you've launched your podcast and you're like, oh, crap, I forgot to launch the website.
Speaker AYeah, I have a checklist for this.
Speaker AIf you go to schoolofpodcasting.com checklist, I've got a podcast launch checklist.
Speaker AI'll walk you through the steps.
Speaker ABecause it makes no sense to buy a media host when you don't have any media to host.
Speaker AIt makes no sense to buy a website when you have no podcast to promote.
Speaker AThere are things you should do in certain orders to help save you money and your sanity, but you need a website.
Speaker AAnd I know people are like, oh, I have a link tree.
Speaker ANo, there's no SEO in that.
Speaker AZero, not a zip.
Speaker AAnd there are other things.
Speaker AI just heard about this Stan website.
Speaker ANo, again, not a lot.
Speaker AYou want to be found.
Speaker AAnd Google likes good words.
Speaker AAnd so I get it.
Speaker ASometimes when we're panicked, sometimes when we're a little shook, mentally, we don't make the best decisions.
Speaker ABut I can help you avoid those by going, oh, wait, hold on.
Speaker AThat music is way too loud.
Speaker AI can't even hear you.
Speaker AYou know, there are these little mistakes we make because we need that outside coach to look at things and go, does this make sense?
Speaker AI think so.
Speaker AI do that all the time.
Speaker AI think I told you this before.
Speaker AThe church I go to has had a typo in their logo for five years now.
Speaker AWe fixed it, but we had a typo and nobody caught it.
Speaker AWe were all way too close.
Speaker AOr we have people that I think spotted it and then didn't have the courage to tell us, hey, you guys did something wrong.
Speaker AHey, you need to polish this.
Speaker AAnd you need people who will tell you the truth.
Speaker AAnd that typically is not your friends and family.
Speaker AYou need an outside point of view.
Speaker ASo don't forget the website.
Speaker AThat's another thing you have to get going if you really want to help grow your podcast.
Speaker AIf you need help with this, this is what I love to do.
Speaker AI've been doing it for almost 20 years.
