Frazzled Minds Make Frazzled Choices

Bad Environments Lead to Bad Decisions

Bad environments lead to bad decisions, and boy, do we have stories to share! Ever looked back at some of your life choices and thought, “What on Earth was I thinking?” Yeah, me too!

We run into the chaos of those moments when our brains were more frazzled than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. We chat about how a little bit of panic can turn us into decision-making nincompoops, like forgetting to get a website for our podcast.

Spoiler alert: Having a website is a big deal if you want anyone to find your show. So, let’s unpack this hot mess together and figure out how to avoid those cringe-worthy blunders!

Looking at our past decisions is like opening a box of stale donuts; it’s messy, and you might regret it. We’re all guilty of making choices when we’re not in the right headspace.

I share classic examples, like the time someone thought not having a website was a smart move. It’s not. You want people to find your podcast? They need a place to land, not just a vague hope that they might stumble across it while scrolling through cat memes.

Now, let's not throw shade. We all start from different places, but this was a classic example of being "rattled" lead to bad decisions.

Takeaways:

  • Bad decisions often come from panic or being overwhelmed, so slow down and think.
  • Having a website is crucial for podcasters to be found and grow their audience.
  • People tend to overlook basic steps when launching, like having a website ready.
  • Without a website, you’re basically invisible to potential listeners trying to find you.
  • Word of mouth is key for podcast growth, but you need a solid strategy to make it work.
  • Don’t let a frazzled mindset lead to bad decisions—stay organized and plan ahead.

Speaker A

Have you ever looked back at some of the bad decisions you've made in your life and realized that you made them when you weren't in the right mindset?

Speaker A

Today, podcasters are still doing that.

Speaker B

Welcome to your podcast consultant.

Speaker B

With more than a decade of experience and millions of downloads, this hall of fame podcaster is a featured speaker, author, and mentor to thousands.

Speaker B

Now he wants to work with you.

Speaker B

He's your podcast consultant, Dave Jackson.

Speaker A

If you look at your decisions that you kind of go, can I do that one over again?

Speaker A

It's probably because you were either frightened or panicked or maybe there was just too much going on and you went, I don't care.

Speaker A

That one.

Speaker A

And you move forward with that.

Speaker A

And I bring this up because I was helping someone on my chat.

Speaker A

Now, I'm not throwing shade here.

Speaker A

We all start at different places, but I saw this and I was like, oh, this is a classic example of that.

Speaker A

I should talk about this on the podcast because the person wanted help with growing their show and sure, don't we all want a bigger audience?

Speaker A

That's great.

Speaker A

And I said, what's your website?

Speaker A

And he sent me.

Speaker A

I'm not sure what it was, to be honest with you.

Speaker A

Oh, he sent me his feed.

Speaker A

And so I'm like, no, no, no, not your feed, your website.

Speaker A

And the person said, oh, yeah, I know I don't have one of those, but I'm in Apple, I'm in Spotify, and I've talked about this a million times.

Speaker A

Search in Apple and Spotify is not good.

Speaker A

And in many cases you can't find your show.

Speaker A

I'll have a link out in the show notes where you can see me prove that point.

Speaker A

And it's not like domains are really expensive.

Speaker A

Sometimes they are, but most of the time they're less than $20 per year.

Speaker A

Per year.

Speaker A

So if you get like Dave's phone.com and you go, ah, it's taken.

Speaker A

Well, maybe Dave's phone show or Dave Show Radio or something like that.

Speaker A

And you look at like, oh, it's only, you know, $18 a year.

Speaker A

Yeah, but you missed it because you were kind of frazzled.

Speaker A

And you can get these at.

Speaker A

I'll have links to namecheap cooler websites is my godaddy reseller if you want to get it there.

Speaker A

These are not super expensive because again, it's like, you know, less than $20 a year.

Speaker A

And he said, I'm actually kind of frazzled because I'm trying to do this, I'm trying to do that.

Speaker A

And things aren't working the way I want.

Speaker A

And I said, okay, but, like, 70% of podcasts are found via word of mouth.

Speaker A

How am I going to word of mouth you if I can't tell people where to go get your show?

Speaker A

And of course, I could say, well, just find them wherever you find podcast on it.

Speaker A

Just explain.

Speaker A

That's a really bad, bad, bad strategy.

Speaker A

A much better strategy is go to my website and have links there to at least Apple and Spotify.

Speaker A

And why not add Iheart because it looks good.

Speaker A

And maybe Amazon while you're at it.

Speaker A

Maybe Overcast, that's a top 10.

Speaker A

And pocket cast, that would be good.

Speaker A

But I can't do that if you don't have a domain.

Speaker A

And your domain can't be.

Speaker A

This is dot, try and dot dash, dot, spell this dot, X, K, M, double X, N, K.

Speaker A

No.

Speaker A

And I know you're like, oh, yeah.

Speaker A

But you could send them that link via email.

Speaker A

Word of mouth.

Speaker A

How are you going to show up in a Google search without a website?

Speaker A

And people talk about things all the time.

Speaker A

Well, look at Amazon.

Speaker A

Yeah, you can look at Amazon because they have Amazon.com walmart.com, all the big companies, and if you want, joe rogan.com.

Speaker A

right.

Speaker A

We all have websites so that we can tell people where to find us, and so can our listeners, and so can our audience.

Speaker A

And look, I get it.

Speaker A

I realize that we're at the beginning trying to figure out how to work this microphone.

Speaker A

And what do you mean I got to upload a file?

Speaker A

And do I do audio or video?

Speaker A

Mike?

Speaker A

Okay, that's great.

Speaker A

But before you launch, you need a website.

Speaker A

Why?

Speaker A

Because when you launch, you want to tell everybody to go to your website where you have at least a trailer and the buttons for Apple, Spotify, Amazon, Iheart, Pocket Casts, and Overcast, so that when you have them there on your website, they can follow the show, but they can't follow the show if they can't find you.

Speaker A

And we don't want to send them into the forest that is podcast apps.

Speaker A

Send them to your website.

Speaker A

And I realize that sometimes I'm going to podcast movement next week as I record this and I have a checklist because I've done this enough that I get to the hotel and I go, ah, crap, I forgot my toothbrush or forgot my deodorant or whatever it is.

Speaker A

Why?

Speaker A

Because I'm scrambling at the last minute to fill my suitcase so that now I'm like, wait, hold on, let's slow down a bit.

Speaker A

Let's make sure, we have everything.

Speaker A

And so there are times when you've launched your podcast and you're like, oh, crap, I forgot to launch the website.

Speaker A

Yeah, I have a checklist for this.

Speaker A

If you go to schoolofpodcasting.com checklist, I've got a podcast launch checklist.

Speaker A

I'll walk you through the steps.

Speaker A

Because it makes no sense to buy a media host when you don't have any media to host.

Speaker A

It makes no sense to buy a website when you have no podcast to promote.

Speaker A

There are things you should do in certain orders to help save you money and your sanity, but you need a website.

Speaker A

And I know people are like, oh, I have a link tree.

Speaker A

No, there's no SEO in that.

Speaker A

Zero, not a zip.

Speaker A

And there are other things.

Speaker A

I just heard about this Stan website.

Speaker A

No, again, not a lot.

Speaker A

You want to be found.

Speaker A

And Google likes good words.

Speaker A

And so I get it.

Speaker A

Sometimes when we're panicked, sometimes when we're a little shook, mentally, we don't make the best decisions.

Speaker A

But I can help you avoid those by going, oh, wait, hold on.

Speaker A

That music is way too loud.

Speaker A

I can't even hear you.

Speaker A

You know, there are these little mistakes we make because we need that outside coach to look at things and go, does this make sense?

Speaker A

I think so.

Speaker A

I do that all the time.

Speaker A

I think I told you this before.

Speaker A

The church I go to has had a typo in their logo for five years now.

Speaker A

We fixed it, but we had a typo and nobody caught it.

Speaker A

We were all way too close.

Speaker A

Or we have people that I think spotted it and then didn't have the courage to tell us, hey, you guys did something wrong.

Speaker A

Hey, you need to polish this.

Speaker A

And you need people who will tell you the truth.

Speaker A

And that typically is not your friends and family.

Speaker A

You need an outside point of view.

Speaker A

So don't forget the website.

Speaker A

That's another thing you have to get going if you really want to help grow your podcast.

Speaker A

If you need help with this, this is what I love to do.

Speaker A

I've been doing it for almost 20 years.

Speaker A
